The awkward stuff in your garage

Garages collect items that most clearance crews cannot legally take: asbestos sheeting, gas bottles, fuel, oil, solvents, pesticides and full tins of paint. Car batteries and tyres are often accepted for an extra fee. Ask each firm for its list before it arrives, so nothing is left behind on the day.

Hazardous household items can usually go to a council household waste recycling centre, many of which take car batteries, engine oil and gas bottles free from residents. For asbestos, use a licensed specialist. Council bulky waste collections in London: Every London borough runs its own bulky waste service and sets its own fees. Lambeth, for example, charges £16 for up to two items plus £7.50 for each extra item. A council collection suits a few large items; for a whole property you will need a clearance firm. See the details.

Before you book a garage clearance in London

Quickwasters publishes loads from £60 plus VAT (one cubic yard) to £380 plus VAT (18 yards). Cullens starts garage clearances from £50 plus VAT, and MM Rubbish Clearance from £85.

  • Ask for the firm's waste carrier number and check it on the Environment Agency public register. If an unlicensed collector fly-tips your waste, you can be fined.
  • Send photos of the whole garage, including the back and any lofts or shelving, and get a written price before the van arrives.
  • Ask what it will not take, such as paint, oil, gas bottles, tyres, batteries or asbestos, and what any extras cost.
  • Take out anything you want to keep, sell or give away first, including tools and bikes that local charities or schemes may want.
  • Check access: can the van reach the garage door, and is anything blocking it?
  • Ask for a waste transfer note or receipt naming the company and its carrier number.

How we ranked / London

We started with every business appearing in Google's local results for garage clearance in London, then checked each one's website, Companies House record, published licence numbers and review platforms such as Trustpilot, Checkatrade, Which? Trusted Traders and TrustATrader. We removed booking apps and brokers that pass your job to another firm, companies that are dissolved and listings we could not tie to a real business. We may also leave out any company at our editorial discretion.

Each remaining firm was scored out of 10 using the same weighting in every city:

Garage clearance in London / FAQs

How much does a garage clearance cost in London?

Quickwasters publishes loads from £60 plus VAT (one cubic yard) to £380 plus VAT (18 yards). Cullens starts garage clearances from £50 plus VAT, and MM Rubbish Clearance from £85. A typical single garage takes between a quarter and a full van load. Heavy items such as rubble, metal and old appliances, and awkward items such as tyres, can add to the price. Always compare at least two written quotes.

What can a garage clearance team not take?

Most crews cannot take asbestos, gas bottles, fuel, oil, solvents, chemicals or full tins of paint, because these need a licence to carry or a specialist disposal route. Tyres, car batteries and fridges are often taken for an extra charge. Ask each firm for its list before booking.

Is a garage clearance cheaper than a skip?

For a single garage, a clearance crew is often similar in price or cheaper once you count the labour, any permit and the items a skip cannot take. For a garage being knocked down, or mostly rubble, a skip is usually better value. See our skip hire rankings for London.

Can the council take my garage junk?

Every London borough runs its own bulky waste service and sets its own fees. Lambeth, for example, charges £16 for up to two items plus £7.50 for each extra item. A council collection suits a few large items; for a whole property you will need a clearance firm. Most council recycling centres also accept car batteries, engine oil and small amounts of DIY waste from residents.

Who is the best garage clearance company in London?

On our research, MM Rubbish Clearance ranks first in London, followed by Quickwasters and Cullens Clearances. The right choice also depends on where you are, how quickly you need the job done and what is in your garage.
