Quick answer

Yes, same day rubbish removal is often possible with a private man and van firm, depending on availability, location and time of day. Councils and skips on public roads take longer, because of booking systems and permits. Whatever you choose, check the carrier is registered before anything is taken away.

Key points

  • Private man and van firms are the most likely to offer same day slots.
  • Council collections and road permits usually need days of notice.
  • A skip on private land can be quicker than one that needs a road permit.
  • Ask whether an urgent job costs extra and get the price in writing.
  • Always check the carrier on the public register, even when you are in a hurry.

Which services can realistically collect today

Same day collection depends on how the service is organised. A private man and van or junk clearance firm with a free slot can often come within hours, particularly for a modest load. Availability varies by city, day of the week and time you ask, so ring or message early in the day.

Other routes need more notice. Council bulky waste collections are booked in advance, and a skip placed on a public road needs a council permit first. The sections below explain why, and what you can do if you are short of time.

Why skips and council services take longer

Skips that stand on the road need a permit from the council. Lead times vary. Cardiff requires the skip company to apply at least one working day ahead, Bristol requires the owner to apply at least five working days before delivery, and Newcastle advises allowing around 10 weekdays for processing. Leeds says applications received before 9am on a weekday are usually reviewed the same day.

On a drive or other private property, a road permit is normally not needed, so a skip can sometimes arrive faster. Our skip permit guide sets out the rules. Remember that placing a skip on the road without permission can lead to penalties, such as a £139 fixed penalty notice in Glasgow.

Council bulky waste collections are also scheduled in advance. The pages we checked for Edinburgh, Cardiff and Newcastle do not describe a same day service, and Cardiff in particular gives you until 2pm on the working day before collection to change items. See our guide to booking a council bulky waste collection if you can wait.

How much does same day removal cost?

We could not find a published national figure for a same day premium. Some firms may charge more for urgent jobs, and others may not, so ask the question directly when you request your quote.

For a rough idea of normal prices, the following examples were published by firms in our rankings and checked on 3 November 2026:

  • Leeds: single items from £45, loads from £65 (about 10 bags) to £450 (about 80 bags), including VAT.
  • Birmingham: man and van loads from £99 including VAT.
  • Glasgow: an eighth of a van from £100 up to a full load at £550, plus VAT.

You can see the firms behind those prices on our Leeds junk clearance ranking. Many firms in other cities quote from photos, so send clear pictures to get a quick written price. Our rubbish removal cost guide explains what shapes the final bill.

TipAsk whether VAT, stairs, parking and special items such as mattresses or fridges are included. A fast quote that leaves things out can cost more on the day.

How to book same day removal step by step

  1. Phone or message several registered firms early in the day and ask who has a slot.
  2. Send photos of everything to be removed, including items in sheds or lofts.
  3. Ask for a written price that states whether it includes VAT and disposal.
  4. Ask for the waste carrier registration number and check it on the public register.
  5. Make sure access is clear, with parking arranged and items ready by the door.
  6. Ask for a receipt or waste transfer note after the job.

Being ready speeds everything up. Group items together, bag loose waste and keep hallways clear, because crews are usually quicker when they do not have to search for items.

Check the carrier, even when you are in a hurry

Urgent jobs are exactly when people skip the checks. You have a legal duty of care for your household waste, and in England your council can issue a fixed penalty of up to £600 if you have not met that duty and your waste is fly-tipped.

Guidance from GOV.UK advises people to ask where the waste will end up, avoid paying cash, insist on a receipt and record the vehicle details. Manchester City Council also warns people to be wary of unexpected offers to remove rubbish, and says passing waste to an unregistered carrier can lead to prosecution or a fixed penalty notice.

Registers are separate for each nation: the Environment Agency in England, SEPA in Scotland and Natural Resources Wales in Wales. In Wales, NRW says private firms such as skip hire or house clearance companies should be registered upper tier carriers, and it advises caution if a firm has no carrier reference, wants cash in hand or charges a very low price.

Our guides on checking a waste carrier licence and fly-tipping fines explain this in more detail.
